Both groups consist of four variants (alpha, beta, gamma, delta), defined by methyl group placement. Tocopherols have saturated side chains; tocotrienols have unsaturated side chains.

The vitamin E variants of tocotrienol occur mainly in the cell membrane, where they help to maintain membranes’ fluidity, stability and function.
