Taurine is the most common amino sulfonic acid in our cells after L-glutamine. Found in high concentrations in heart muscle, skeletal muscle, brain, retina, and platelets.
Taurine is a naturally occurring substance synthesized in the brain and liver from the amino acids L-methionine and L-cysteine. Taurine derives its name from the Latin word taurus (bull).
Cellular function: Essential for cell volume regulation, calcium homeostasis, and membrane stabilization (electrolytes balance and exchange between cells)Cardiac and skeletal muscle health: Supports normal cardiac function by modulating calcium transporters and maintaining contractility. In skeletal muscle, it facilitates excitation-contraction coupling and protects against oxidative damage. Neuroprotective effects: In the central nervous system (CNS), taurine functions as a neurotransmitter, neuromodulator, and neuroprotectant.
Bile acid conjugation: Aids digestion and maintains cholesterol homeostasis.
